Roadkill Meditations

How can we connect to the quotodian mass dying that forms the mostly unnoticed background noise of life in ecological collapse? The performance and installation "Roadkill Meditations" tries to create a sensual relationship to the "hyperobject" of the Sixth Mass Extinction by creating a ritualistic space to come to visceral terms with the biospherical reality at hand.
Grown out of a collaboration between Sabrina Rosina's work "Roadkil(l)n" and Kilian Jörg's work on car infrastructure the two collect animal carcasses from roads as an artistic practice in the days prior to the performance. They then create a ritualistic shrine with a focus on the olfactorial. In guided meditations the public is invited to open their senses to the real of the now. Smelling dead bodies is heavily stigmatised in our society, but it is also a neurological stimulus for grief. By translating the abstract knowledge about fossil capitalism in something felt in an institutionalized framework, they try to facilitate a process of developing a complex web of emotions to settle ourselves for the times to come. The meditations are usually accompanied by a drone composition performed live by Samuel Toro Pèrez.
